What happens if my system doesn’t
make as much power as I use?

If you are not making enough power for the demands of your property then the grid makes up the difference.

The main value of the electricity you generate is in the power that comes from your roof instead of from your supplier. This shows up as savings off your electricity bill when you use, and pay for, less of their power.

The inverter is clever. It knows to make electricity that is at a slightly higher voltage than the grid and therefore the solar panels are the primary supply to your home and the grid is the back up. So you will always use your own power first.

What happens if my system makes more power than I use?

If the panels are making exactly what the property needs then the grid is not required and there is no surplus. However this almost never happens and usually you are making either too much or too little.
If you are making more power than you are using and don’t have a battery, then your excess power will go back to the grid. If you are on a tariff with a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) then you’ll receive some money for each unit of electricity generated (kWh) off your bill.
We can advise you on the best suppliers and tariffs to maximise your savings.

A Brief History of Solar PV

PV stands for photovoltaic and means electricity generated from light. Albert Einstein won his only Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921 for discovering the science on which this technology is based.

Energy from the sun causes small particles (electrons) on a plate to move. This is the photoelectric effect.

When the electrons flow down a wire this becomes the photovoltaic effect, and you have made electricity.

In essence, the science of photovoltaics is no more complicated than that.

Making it Usable

Electrons flowing round a circuit in one direction is called direct current (DC). When they constantly change direction it is called alternating current (AC).

Because Thomas Edison lost an argument with Nikola Tesla in around 1890, all the appliances in our homes are powered with AC. This is a problem because all solar panels make DC.

The solution is a piece of electrical equipment called an inverter. The inverter converts the generated power from DC to AC, which is then usable in the house.

FAQs

Solar panels work best where there’s a lot of sunlight. The main factors that define how suitable your roof is for solar panels are:

  • The size of your roof
  • The orientation of your roof relative to due south
  • Shade from trees or buildings

Another important factor is your energy useage.

The cost of solar PV panels varies depending on things like the size of the system, the brand, the installation requirements, and any additional components needed such as batteries.

On average, the cost of a residential solar PV system ranges from around £5,000 to £15,000.

With proper maintenance and care (they don’t need much), solar panels typically operate for at least 25 years, and often much longer. The panels we install have a performance guarantee, which states that typically (depending on the brand) they promise to work at at least 80-90% efficiency after 25 years.

It varies depending on the system installed, the suitability of the location and your energy tariff and usage, but generally speaking the typical payback is 6-12 years.

Your bespoke quote will include a simple “payback estimator” graph showing when your expected revenue from the system will overtake the price of it, based on current energy prices.

Like every other installer, we are able to facilitate a loan for the purchase of a PV system through our specialist brokers. However, in terms of best advice, you’re much more likely to get a better deal if you explore personal finance options.

There isn’t a simple answer to this as it varies between manufacturers. The typical product warranty for panels is 10-25 years, and for inverters is 10 years. All products that we install have a longer useable life that this though, in the same way that your car or home appliances will be usable beyond their product warranties.

Panels also come with a performance warranty, which is typically 25+ years and guarantees that after this time they will still perform at or above a certain % of their original efficiency, typically 80-90%.

We also provide our own 10 year insurance-backed workmanship warranty on all of our work.

Our Accreditation and Governance

All our installations, procedures and certifications are governed by the Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC) and the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) installer standards. As RECC Members, we have agreed to abide by the high standards set out in the RECC Consumer Code, following the consumer journey from start to finish. This also includes The Deposit and Workmanship Warranty Insurance Scheme Working with MCS defines, maintains and improves the quality of our installations by certifying low-carbon energy technologies – including, solar, battery storage and heat pumps.
